Village: Sunagakure no Sato
Clan: Shouki
Rank: Jounin
Element Afffinity: Doton and Fuuton
PERSONALITY
Despite Sano’s troubled past he has remained amazingly optimistic and happy. Many of his clan have adopted similar attitudes, but generally they are masks to disguise their almost sociopathic behavior. Unfortunately, remaining a happy child is quiet difficult in the life that the clan provides. However, Sano is one of the few that has been able to keep his smile. Most of it is because of a mother who provided him with a wonderful love that chased away the nightmares. This affection has placed his mother in very high regard and she is perhaps his role model in all things and the one person who truly means the world to him. If there is one thing that the normally very forgiving Sano cannot stand, it is insults, threats, and slander against his mother.
His mom has taught him many things, but most of all she has raised him to make the most out of life and to make himself happy. In comparison to the rest of his clan Sano does not train as much as he could or work on his poisons as much as they do. However, he does give himself plenty of opportunities to have fun and be the person he wants to be. Though in the recent years he has had little opportunity to socialize he is apt at making friends and is quick to take a bad situation and find the good in it. He is smart, but nothing like a genius. It is the sort of knowledge that comes with the love of reading and the patience to analyze a problem. He certainly doesn’t know more than anyone else, but he enjoys finding the answers. Though Sano enjoys a good joke he isn’t very talented in humor himself. Generally if he tries to give a joke he will screw up the punch line. Sano knows his manners and can display them when necessary, but generally he prefers to be more laid back and treats everyone as if they are equals.
Most of the time, Sano is just a fun loving guy looking to get every moment out of his life. His childhood wasn’t ideal, but it has taught him that life is short. Therefore, he wants to go out there and enjoy it while he can. He isn’t afraid to die because he knows that when it comes he will have had no regrets. However, just because he isn’t afraid of death doesn’t mean he welcomes it just yet. Though his ambition has made him a bit of a pariah among his clan Sano is more than upfront with his life’s ambition. Sano wishes to become strong enough so that he can change the traditions of his clan and free the young ones from the rules of torture. Sano does not blame his clan for following something they have known all their life, but he hopes to become the head of his clan so that he can help the Shouki change for the better. He just wants to give those born in his clan just as much of a chance of being happy as he was given.
APPEARANCE AND ATTIRE
Sano is just a little taller than average, but his weight is perfect for his height. He keeps his body in excellent shape by constantly training. Sano’s body is built more like a runner or a gymnast. He focuses more on stamina and strong corded muscles that can lash out on a moment’s reaction. With his training he is very flexible and his compact body mass means it is easier for him to hide the sounds of his movement. His legs are probably the most defined muscles on his body, but his arms closely follow. His chest although well toned does not have a six pack or defined pectoral muscles like you might find in a bodybuilder’s body.
Sano’s head is adorned by raven black hair that is close cropped in an almost business style hair cut. It seems to be the only hair on his head. The bangs of his hair end just before his eyebrows and the back of his hair ends quite a few inches before his neck meets his shoulders. Despite his age Sano doesn’t seem to have any facial hair and the need to shave has of yet come over him. His face holds no obvious blemishes or scars and it almost seems that his family took extra care to make sure that the area went undamaged even through all their training. His eyes are a piercing turquoise that only a few oceans could ever compare to. His lips are almost constantly smiling typically one of lazy contentment.
There are really only two distinguishing features that make Sano noticeable and both are easily concealed with the right choice of clothing. The first is perhaps something that many shinobi collect over their lifetimes and that is a set of wicked looking scars. All along his right arm are horizontal and diagonal scars around a kunai’s blade length. They are symbols of Sano’s training and therefore are rarely hidden unless given special permission by the clan elder for a mission. His other distinguishing feature is a permanent tattoo on his chest right over his heart of the seal given to all shinobi when they enter the academy. The tattoo is of the clan symbol, three crescent moons, representation of the brain waves that will take their secrets to the grave.
Despite the fact that Sano resides in Sunagakure he neglects to wear anything that could perhaps protect him from the everlasting sandstorms, like goggles or a mask. Instead Sano opts for wearing pants, shirts, and bandages to help cover as much as his body that he can and keep his skin from getting directly worn down by the sand. As a top Sano wears a black button down shirt with the sleeves rolled up to about his elbows. The shirt allows him to cover most of his body, but the sleeves are always folded upwards to allow his scars to still remain exposed and show his loyalty to his clan. The shirt is black to better help Sano hide at night. The only thing not black on his shirt is the symbol of his clan stitched in gray right over his heart. It is a symbol of his pledge and since he cannot walk around shirtless it is proof of the seal he had placed upon his body.
Along with the shirt Sano also wears matching pants and sandals. After passing the academy he has also added Sunagakure’s headband to his ensemble. His pants, like his shirt, are also in black with a shade that closely matches the button down shirt as well. The pants end just about half way down from his knees to his ankles. However, where they end black bandages, wrapped around both legs, begin. The bandages are just a shade darker then either the pants or the shirt and their wrappings continue even beyond where the pants end. Sano uses these bandages to protect his legs from the sand and biting insects. The bandages extend all the way from his feet, where he wraps them around his heel, to his knees. To protect his feet Sano wears black sandals similar to the kind any shinobi wears. They allow flexibility while still using a rough textile to protect the feet from harm. The only other thing Sano wears is a headband of Sand. It is worn right above his right kneecap and remains noticeable without having to stay glued to his forehead.

HISTORY
Sano’s childhood although seemingly harsh to any outside views was quiet average for anyone within the Shouki Clan. In fact Sano’s childhood was perhaps better than most children of his clan due to his beloved mother. The early years of his life were filled with care and love. He was treated like just another child and was allowed to progress at his own rate. Initially after his birth he was presented with a variety of inoculations that held poisons much like a doctor might vaccinate a child for diseases. It was standard for all the members of the clan and since Sano had survived the initial birthing process the actual poisons really posed no threat to the young child. It is this very early childhood that is the public face of the clan. Once the child hits six things change in the young one’s life.
Once Sano became eligible to begin learning the art of being a shinobi his life drastically altered. Before his training began he was given the Junjiru Seal and in gaining such promised his loyalty to his clan and village. Once his training had started his time among children of the village was limited to just the classes. Once the academy was done for the day Sano’s father would be there to pick the child up and bring him back to the compound so that the real training could begin. During those initial days all training was focused on mastering the academy basics and then further training in poison and antidote creation. Sano was schooled in the proper herbs and plants used in creating such things not just in Kaze no Kuni, but shinobi who had gone all over during their missions brought back detailed journals of resources they had discovered there. It was policy to do such as a Shouki clan member and Sano spent hours pouring himself over these journals. His years in those early days seemed to pass by quickly with his daily lessons keeping him busy.
At the age of 12 he was considered learned enough to begin partaking in missions. However, instead of being immediately placed in a team the Shouki Clan gained special permission to keep Sano back and personally train him until they felt he was ready to officially join a team and begin his life as a Genin. It was a little unorthodox, but given their reputation the other Clans in their alliance saw no threat by their request. With the request accepted Sano began intensive training for the next 3 years. His knowledge of poisons and antidotes was still broadened, but the training was more than that. Perhaps the harshest measure of their training was teaching the young Sano on how to receive and deal out torture. The clan was renowned for keeping its secrets and obtaining the secrets of others and one of the ways they did this was through the tradition of teaching torture to their youths at a young age.
Learning the art of torture was perhaps one of the hardest experiences in Sano’s life. He was forced to guard his thoughts even under the most strenuous pain and had to guard the innocence of his very soul when learning to torture with practice partners who were his very cousins and family members. Some of his partners lost a part of themselves in the heat of the torture and become something different. Sano might have joined those unlucky few if it had not been for his mother. Through all that training she was there and she offered her own personal lessons. She helped raise Sano into the person he is today and allowed him to see the bright side of everything. He had a lot of rough moments, but she provided a mentality that few within the clan had and it spread and was nurtured by Sano. When he became 15 his father and the clan gave him permission to officially join a team and begin taking missions. Though Sano still hadn’t finished his training he was able to commit to it on his own time and gained his own goals.
Coming in at a rather late age as a Genin many outside the clan believed that the young boy would be at a disadvantage in comparison to his other teammates who were more experienced and had been on missions already. However, Sano took to the squad with fervor and ease. The extensive training he had gone through with his father had made him more than prepared for the missions he undertook and those within his squad were blown away by his skill. To Sano this was perhaps the best years of his life. Free from the shackles of his clan’s traditions the young shinobi was able to enjoy life to the fullest despite the war and conflict going on around them. He made time to simply do nothing and practically threw his friendship at the other Genin in his squad.
Sano adapted well to his new training regimen managed to grow even stronger. The shinobi learned about things such as teamwork and its importance during missions. During this time he also began to establish himself within the alliance of Clans. Previously he had been sheltered by his family, but now he was able to mingle with others and become a familiar sight to many outside his Clan. In 2 years Sano had experienced more as a Genin then he had his entire life. He had matured greatly in this time and had even decided on his life goal. Seeing what other shinobi could obtain outside the conflict Sano decided that he would make it his life’s ambition to one day become strong enough to take over his clan and once in power abolish the old traditions that condoned the torture and teaching of torture to children.
With his new goal Sano had pushed himself harder than ever before. It wasn’t soon after that Sano's squads accomplishments and experience had earned them to take harder missions to place their lives in further risk. They had become so accomplished that they had earned the right to be called Chuunin and would continue working together as an effective team only occasionally going off with others as it was needed for the sake of the alliance.
The missions they took after becoming Chuunin were much more difficult, but it only helped the group grow stronger and to drive them closer. During the years that Sano served as a Chuunin he sharpened his skills further. The shinobi began to develop another element nature and his skills in the taijutsu form of his clan vastly improved. Working in conjunction with his squad they became a force to be reckoned with. Although split up occasionally to lead or work with other squads the members of his original squad never forgot who their closest allies were in the village. The group had even managed to stay close to those who had trained them and lead them on missions even as they went on to lead other such groups. Sano’s growing experience as a Chuunin began to shape him into the Jounin he is today.
Sano served as a Chuunin for 4 years until those that led the alliance of Clans finally saw fit to promote him to the rank of Tokubetsu Jounin at 19. The promise he had shown on missions since beginning his career as a Genin had made this promotion inevitable. Sano had overcome family circumstances, had adapted well with the alliance, and had even bonded with fellow shinobi. As a Tokubetsu Jounin he started off working underneath other shinobi during missions or leading groups of Chuunin on missions that required a more powerful shinobi in the mix. During these initial years Sano finally began to master many of the much more difficult and lethal Jutsu of the clan. He took to the rigors of the more lethal Jutsu quiet easily and mastered even the most difficult of his Clan’s.
By the time he had fully come to understand his Kekkei Genkai he was 23. On the recommendation of Sano’s father the alliance saw fit to have Sano become a Jounin. Sano’s broadening battle capabilities made him ideals for the challenges that were forced on a Jounin. For the next 6 years Sano worked as a Jounin utilizing his poisons against what foes were left for the alliance as the final conflicts of the war dwindled. Sano served faithfully in this capacity for 3 years, but when the wars finally ended and Sunagakure no Sato was founded Sano saw his chance to contribute to the village in a manner that held less bloodshed. By the time he was 26 he had seriously begun to push towards a transfer in position. By the time Sano was 29 the Kazekage finally granted Sano’s desire. Although still called upon for the dangerous mission when required Sano's major focus now is as a Jounin-sensei educating the new graduates from the academy and teaching them the skills they need in their new world. There is still much in Sano’s life that is uncertain, but one thing is for sure. He will not rest until he has freed his clan from their barbaric customs and whatever children are assigned to him will be taught everything Sano knows to prepare them for a difficult future.
